Employee Handbook and Policy Review– When an injury occurs the employer expects the employee to report the injury immediately. However, what does immediately mean to you? To me, immediately is right away, this very moment tell a Supervisor or Safety Director. Immediately to some may mean, “well since it’s Friday at 4:30 I’ll go home and put ice on it and tell my boss on Monday morning.” We need to define immediately and not let others interpret their own definition. In your Employee Handbook make sure to define, “When an injury occurs you must report to your Supervisor / Safety Director within 15 minutes of the incident. If you do not report the incident within the allotted time frame, a written warning will be enforced.” This procedure will allow your team to perform a proper Accident Investigation and oversee the area before changes occur.
